Wales opens Peatland Restoration Grants of £10,000 to £250,000, closing 30 November 2026

Natural Resources Wales has opened a new round of competitive Peatland Restoration Grants for private landowners and public and voluntary bodies. Applications close on 30 November 2026.

The Welsh grant round

The National Peatland Action Programme, managed by Natural Resources Wales and funded by the Welsh Government, is offering competitive Peatland Restoration Grants of between £10,000 and £250,000. Grants can be used to develop or deliver a restoration project in Wales and are open to private landowners and to public and voluntary organisations. Applications must be in by 30 November 2026. Recordings of the programme's guidance webinars, held on 6 October, were due to be made available online.

England's commitments

For comparison, the IUCN UK Peatland Programme's summary of England's Environment Improvement Plan, published in December 2025, highlights:

  • the existing commitment to restore 280,000 hectares of peatland by 2050
  • £85 million of investment in peatland restoration by 2030
  • restoration of 40,000 hectares by April 2030, supported by the Nature for Climate Peatland Grant Scheme and Landscape Recovery projects
  • a geospatial Peatland Restoration Register in 2026
  • legislation to ban the sale of peat and peat-containing products, with timing still to be confirmed

The Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan, also summarised by the Programme, says the government is working with the IUCN to attract investment through carbon credits under the Peatland Code.
